In the USA, diamond grinding and grooving have been applied for decades to improve the evenness and skid resistance of concrete pavement surfaces. Both diamond ground and grooved textures are produced by running a series of saw blades which are gang-mounted on a drive shaft over the concrete surface. For diamond grinding, the separation of the blades is set by spacer disks and is at most 3 mm. For grooving, the blades are separated by more than 10 mm. During past years both methods have been modified for different applications. For example, specially designed cutting heads are used to texture the surface of city roads. Due to the increasing requirements in reducing noise emission, a special type of surface is used - the Next Generation Conerete Surface (NGCS) which currently provides excellent noise reduction for concrete pavement.
